September Meeting

Our normal first Monday of the month meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept, 8 because of Labor day. We will feature shadow photos in our in-club photo contest.

Sam Ruljancich, Executive Director of the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs has confirmed that he will be there. Sam has kindly offered to judge the contest and offer critiques to members who would like one. Photos don't have to be "shadow" photos to be critiqued.

PTPC Special March Meeting Wed, 23rd

Please join us at 6pm on March 23, at the Port Townsend Community Center (corner of Tyler and Lawrence, Uptown) for a special club meeting. We need to judge two other clubs' photos as part of the traveling salon and we can discuss upcoming events like the Maritime Contest/Exhibit, fieldtrips, postcard contests, etc.
Time permitting we can also share photos.
Refreshments will be provided.

Member Nancy Krill and her sailing partner, Mark, will share photos they took on her incredible sailing journey from north eastern Canada down to Antarctica then up the west coast of South America and finally Alaska. This is an opportunity for those who missed their presentation at Winter Wanderlust to share in their adventure.

Members can bring photos to share before the meeting. Come early, there's always an interesting conversation about photography.

Photo Club Exhibit at the Bishop Hotel

The Port Townsend Photo Club currently has an exhibit at the Bishop Victorian Hotel, downtown Port Townsend. The show will be up for March and April of 2011. Thirty members have photos hanging.

The next PTPC meeting is our end of the year annual celebration. This is our second year to have this end of the year event and like last year, we will have a pot luck dinner/meeting at the PT Senior Center (Community Center) on Monday, December 7th starting at 6 pm. Everyone should bring a "dish" either a dessert, or main dish, or salad or beverage etc. to share. Members should also bring their own plate and utensils.

We will show the ongoing work on the Fort Worden loop project and we will select the best photos of the year from the previous contest winners from the four Club contests and the Jefferson County Fair. The contests were:March-Port Townsend scenes, June-Portraits, September-Landscapes, November-Still Life and General.

11-2 Port Townsend Photo Club Meeting & Still Life Contest

For the PTPC November meeting join us from 6-7 pm for a general discussion, sharing of photos and entering your contest photos. At 7 pm, we will start our final photo competition for the year. We will have two subjects - still life and pictorial. Pictorial being all subjects. You can enter two prints; one in each subject or two in one subject. Challenge your self in both subjects. Club members will choose places in each subject and accomplished Photographer Bill Black from the Olympic Peaks Camera Club will critique all entries. Please join us for fun and a terrific photo learning experience.

10-4 School of Athens Lecture Series with Photographer Phil Borges

What a wonderful lecture I attended this afternoon at the Rose Theatre with Phil Borges. His images were portraits from his travels all over the world including Tibet, Kenya, and Peru. His presentation included haunting images of monks and nuns that had been jailed in Tibet and had made their way to freedom in Dharamsala. I didn't realize until I searched his website that I believe I heard him speak as part of a panel discussion in 2007 at the Microsoft Pro Summit in Redmond. I think everyone who left the lecture was touched by the images we saw and the work he is doing with projects like Women Empowered Project, the Tibetan Portrait and Enduring Spirit exbibit. As an ex-Elementary teacher his work with Bridges of Understanding, an online program connecting school children all over the world, was just amazing.

Dave from Logan Graphics, a consumer products company dealing with mat and other supplies for picture frames, will join Johanna from Akami Art Supply company and do a one hour presentation on mostly mating work and some framing information.

Michael McKee is going to give a presentation on web design, internet sites to share your photos on like Flickr or Smug Mug, info on blogging, Facebook and Wordpress. He plans on covering a variety of topics you need to think about when debating if you want a web designer to build your site, or use a "canned site" or just have fun sharing with a free account like Flickr or sell your work on a site like Smug Mug. David has info on a couple educational sites to share with the Club and I have several that I will suggest too.

The second part of the program let's do show and tell. Lots of great images are being shot this summer, bring them in to share.

You might not have thought about all the possibles available to share your photos with family and friends plus all the online communities related to photo sharing on a site like Flickr. I think for those of us that can't get away to attend a class websites like scottkelby.com offer a way to learn about all aspects of photography from home.

This month's contest theme is Portraits and is open to all members. No speaker this month just members critiquing each others work and picking winners in this month's contest. The meeting is open to the public. There is a yearly fee of $20 to join and it gets you access to the Club's private website where we post photos, make comments and do a lot of sharing about photography between meeting. On Monday March 2nd at 7 pm, our regular meeting will be at the community center. Local professional outdoor and nature photographer Rod Barbee will be sharing some of his thought processes and techniques behind capturing compelling images in the field. Some of the topics include making close up images, creating dramatic wide angle landscapes, using light and contrast, effective composition, and shooting with Photoshop in mind.

Rod Barbee is the author of the Photographer’s Guide to Puget Sound and Western Washington (Countryman Press, 2007) and the co-author of The Photographer’s Guide to the Oregon Coast (Countryman Press, 2004) and has been a regular contributor to Outdoor Photographer magazine.

Deja Webster's animal portraits have helped many cats and dogs to find new homes, often with people who have come to adopt them from far beyond the county line. This is one example of photography making a difference to many animal and human lives. I will occasionally feature her work here.

Permanent PTPC Show

As of today, work by members of the Port Townsend Photoclub will be on display on the walls of the big room in the PT Community Center. The show is to be permanent, but photos will be exchanged periodically. At this time, the display includes work by Barbara Sachi, Bob Gray, Daniel Shunra, David Gluckman, Kay Harper, Patricia Moreland, Phil Baumgarten, Phyllis Wurscher, Rocky Day, Sue Reid, Wil Young, and Yvonne Panchot.

Photographs will not be for sale at the Community Center, but they can be purchased from the photographers directly. Contact information is provided on-site.
